What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Modern car keys have unique chips that are specific to each vehicle, unlike older keys. This prevents thieves from simply taking the key and starting the car.

The keys can be purchased from the dealership or cloned at a locksmith's shop. The process of the manufacturer varies, but it involves turning the ignition key to the "on" position, without starting the car and then removing the key within the specified time.

Transponder Codes

When a transponder is questioned it transmits an encoded signal with the four-digit code. This signal is called a SQUAWK code and is the basis for aircraft identification on radar screens. It can also be used to send an exact message to the air traffic control system in a crisis or to inform controllers of changing weather conditions. Squawk codes are frequently used to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot is unable to communicate via radio. They are essential for safe flying.

Every aircraft has a transponder that responds to radar interrogation by identifying a code. This enables ATC to identify the aircraft on a radar screen that is busy. Transponders can be set to respond in a variety of ways when asked. Mode A is the only mode that transmits the code, whereas mode C also provides altitude information. Mode S transponders offer more detailed information including call signs and positions that can be helpful in airspace that is congested.

A common sight is a small, beige box under the seat of a pilot in most aircraft. This is the transponder and it is set to transmit a SQUAWK code whenever the airplane is activated by air traffic control. The transponder can be set in the  ON position, ALT position, or SBY (standby) position.

Air traffic control will often instruct a pilot "squawk the ident". This is a directive for the pilot to hit the IDENT button on their transponder. The ident button causes the aircraft blink on ATC radar screens which allows them to identify your aircraft on the screen.

There are 63 distinct codes that can be assigned to aircrafts, but there are also some reserved codes that prevent the use of a specific code in an area that is prone to traffic or emergencies. The discrete code block configuration is dependent on statistical analysis in order to reduce the likelihood of two aircraft with the same SQUAWK code being within the same sector.

A transponder key has an exclusive chip inside that contains the ID code. When a car's security light comes on, this means that the ID code on the key isn't matching the code on the vehicle's computer. The immobilizer of the car will be disabled and the car won't start without another key. To prevent this from happening, Pop-A-Lock recommends that customers purchase only new transponder keys or have a professional locksmith like ours cut them for them.

PIN Codes

A PIN code is a set of numbers (usually 4 or 6 digits), which are used to gain access to the device, service, or system. For instance, a smartphone phone has a PIN code that the user sets when they first purchase the device. They must enter it each time they wish to use it. PIN codes are also commonly used to safeguard ATM or POS transactions,[1 secure access control (doors computers, doors, cars),[2] computer systems,[3] and internet transactions.

While a longer PIN number may appear more secure but there are ways to hack or guess the PIN code as short as four digits. It is recommended that the PIN should be at least six digits long with the combination of letters and numbers to provide more security. Certain OEMs also require PIN codes for aftermarket key programmer, as a security measure to prevent unauthorised users from stealing data from the modules.

VIN Numbers

VIN numbers are used to identify vehicles and provide a wealth information about them. VIN numbers are unique to every vehicle on earth, except alien cars (or whatever). The 17 numbers of the VIN code are a mixture of letters and numbers which can be decoded to reveal vital information regarding your vehicle or truck.

Modern cars are digital libraries that contain a wealth of information about their history and specifications. A VIN number is the key to access this information, allowing you to learn everything from whether your vehicle is in a recall to the number of times it's been owned by different owners.

A VIN number is comprised of different sections, each with particular information. The first digit, for instance, indicates what type of vehicle it is, for example, a passenger car, pickup truck, or SUV. The second number is the manufacturer. The third digit identifies the car's assembly division and the fourth through eighth digits define the model type, restraint system type body type, engine and transmission codes. The ninth number is the check digit which helps prevent fraud by ensuring that the VIN number hasn't been altered.

In North America, 10th through 17th numbers of the VIN are known as the Vehicle Identification Section (VIS).  G28  and eleventh digits indicate the year of the vehicle's manufacture. The eleventh digit indicates which assembly plant produced the vehicle. The digits tenth through seventeenth can also include additional information like features or options that are installed inside the vehicle.


The VIN code is a serial code with six digits, which uniquely identify a car or truck. The final digit is also the check number and the rest of the numbers are transliterated into numbers. For example, the first digit gets eight, the next digits increase by one until it reaches nine at the seventh digit, which then changes to two. Then, the whole VIN is converted back to its original form by multiplying each digit's weight by 11. If the result is equal to the check digit, then the VIN is valid.

Data Transfer
